112th Boston Marathon

Today marked the 112th running of the Boston Marathon. The women’s finish was the closest in history. Ethiopian, Dire Tune, crossed the finish line a mere two seconds before Russian, Alevtina Biktimirova. (And yes, I am still working on pronouncing her name!)

But wow could both these women run!

So as I finished my usual lunchtime workout I watched in amazement as these women fought all the way to the finish. Their sprinting made me do some thinking.

How much interval work do these marathoners do? Both women were able to turn it on at the end after running an average of just under a six minute mile for 25.75 miles. Now that is impressive!

So as many of you have heard me say before…do you want to be a marathoner or a sprinter? Apparently there are elite long distance runners that have taken a page out of the books of elite level sprinters.

Look all of these women are lean, whether they are a marathoner or a sprinter. But isn’t reassuring to know you can reach your fat loss goals by doing LESS cardio!

Sprinters have more muscle because they train their bodies that way. I have NEVER seen an overweight sprinter, but I HAVE seen overweight marathoners. Next time you are at your local gym take a look around. I am sure there are a few people you can point to that run on a treadmill for WELL over an hour. Do their body compositions ever change? Do they look like you want to? Unless they are an elite level marathoner, I highly doubt it!

Do yourself a favor and start incorporating interval training into your fitness program. Do you have questions on what programs to do? Visit my website...
